R you CONDITION them! After shipping. I paid about $4 a piece. Great price! The shipping was fast. The packaging just barely made it. 6 of 14 were perfect, 6 were fine, 2 needed one touch of super glue on a corner. Seriously, NO problem. If you want them for food service, you must realize that they are not advertised that way, and you are going to have to prep them. The bottoms are flat with very nice little raised gripper pads. The tops are naturally textured. However, the edges are rough shorn slate, ... which is what is going to give you that beautiful flaked edge look, AND the REQUIREMENT to prep them before using with food. They are sharp in places,...and,...nobody has removed any of the loose half on half off bits. It's a flaky stone! BEAUTIFUL. To condition it,.. I rubbed coconut oil with a rough cloth and pulled up and scrubbed around all the edges to remove any of the loose flakes from the rough mill work. Oh My Goodness! These are absolutely Beautiful now, and will not chip or flake into the food. They will shatter into a million pieces if you drop them on a tile or stone surface. You might be able to wash them in the dishwasher. But, I think the pads on back will fall off if you do. You will have to keep them oiled if you want them to look shiny. I used the Rectangle Slate Coaster as a background for an Easter display. I used the Round Slate Coaster as the stone that was rolled away from the tomb when Jesus was risen. I then used it again as just a drawing piece. I used chalk markers and it washed right off with no issue. Just what I needed! Good quality - the thickness of the slate varied quite a bit between pieces but wasn't an issue for me. The feet underneath are a nice touch.
