Floating Candles? How Do They Work?

3 min read

You’re shopping for candles online when you come across something a little unexpected…floating candles. Candles that actually sit on water? What. On. Earth.

So, what are floating candles, and how do they work? These clever little candles are specially shaped to stay balanced on the surface of the water while keeping the wick above it. They may look like a bit of candle magic, but the reason they float is actually pretty simple.

You might think this is a silly question! But really, there are a lot of people who call our office and want to know ~ what is a floating candle…and how can you use them?

What Are Floating Candles?

What are floating candles

Floating candles are exactly what they sound like: candles designed to sit on the surface of water while they burn. Their wide, low-profile shape helps them stay balanced instead of tipping or sinking, making them perfect for bowls, vases, pools, and other water-filled displays. They’re available in different sizes and colors, so they can be used for everything from simple home décor to weddings, parties, and seasonal centerpieces.

How Do Floating Candles Work?

Floating candles stay on the water because of a simple combination of shape, weight, and buoyancy. Candle wax is less dense than water, so it naturally floats, while the candle’s wide, low-profile design spreads the weight evenly across the surface. This helps it stay balanced and upright instead of tipping or rolling over like a regular candle might.

How do floating candles work

The wick remains above the waterline, where it can keep drawing melted wax and feeding the flame as the candle burns. The water simply supports the candle underneath, which is why the wick needs to stay completely dry. Place the candle gently on calm water and give it enough room to float freely, and it should remain steady from start to finish. A little science, a clever shape, and suddenly the whole floating-on-water thing makes perfect sense.

How Should You Use a Floating Candle?

Floating candles will instantly change up the look of a table, centerpiece or outdoor setting! While being absolutely beautiful, floating candles are so affordable they will fit into almost every budget. Plus the ease of using floating candles makes them a perfect choice.

A few great ways to use floating candles:

  • One of the fabulous uses of a floating candle include inside a cylinder vase! Using candles in cylinder vases instantly gives you a blank canvas underneath the floating candle! You have space where you can easily showcase vase fillers, fresh or silk flowers submersed with your favorite bloom.
  • Floating candles also look fabulous on a table or island in a dish garden or low lying bowl. Most all of us have these containers in our very own cabinets and can add new life to a bowl by adding candles in water! Who knew it could be that easy?
  • You can even create outdoor masses of floating candles in vases to create a unique fire-pit feel for guests! It not only looks amazing, it creates warmth for guests!
  • Floating candles in outdoor settings, especially pools, create magnificent ambiance! Most people underestimate the amount needed to make the pool feel full of candle light. We suggest using 3” diameter floater candles in pools and using at least a quantity of 72 to fill it up.

How Long Do Floating Candles Burn?

How long a floating candle burns mostly comes down to its size. Quick Candles’ 1.5-inch floating candles burn for around four hours, while the 2-inch size lasts approximately four to five hours. For weddings, receptions, or events that continue well into the evening, 3-inch floating candles offer a much longer burn time of around eight to ten hours. Whichever size you choose, place the candle gently on the water and keep the wick dry—a soaked wick can bring the whole glowing display to a very quick and unimpressive end.

Floating Candle Safety Tips

Floating candles may sit on water, but they are still open flames and should be treated like any other candle. Whether you are using them in a simple bowl at home or as part of largerwedding table centerpieces, a few basic precautions will help keep the display safe.

  • Place the container on a flat, stable surface.

  • Keep flowers, greenery, fabric, and other decorations away from the flame.

  • Avoid positioning candles near fans, vents, or open windows.
